    Mike,

I dont understand…..I recently listened to teaching by Mark Driscoll posted at the Mars Hill website about “Humor.” Not only did Pastor Funny describe the old testament as a “hillbilly redneck comedy,” but he also discovered humor in Genesis 9 about one righteous guy who gets drunk and ends up naked in his tent. He also pointed out “scatological humor” that he found in Ezekiel 4 when “God said,” go to the bathroom, stack up some feces, and then cook over it. Inotherwords, he said, “Light the poop on fire,” which he claims is a case of “poopy comedy.” Then,…according to Driscoll, there was the funny story in Gal. 5 aboutthe “circumcision picker,” which he called the “cut off your pickle joke.”

To put this all in perspective, when I told my 84 year old friend that Driscoll referred to Jesus as a dude, she said, “He was NOT a dude,…He was a King!!!!” Now that is the attitude on the lips of men and women who truely walked with God.

In this short e-mail, I cannot address all of my concerns related to mark Driscoll. Why are so many excusing a man who laughs at Noah? Since when do we find humor in someone stumbling in thier walk with God? Only a fool would laugh or mock at someones fall.

In another sermon/teaching, Pastor Funny has fun with the idea of “How human was Jesus?” Driscoll says like I tell my daughter, “Yes,…He had the boy part,” and yes Jesus did No 1 and No 2 but He did it “perfectly”….He “never got the toilet all wet.” Unbelievably, DRiscoll is planting word pictures and thoughts in our minds that diminish the holiness of God. Tozer warned, “WE SHOULD AND MUST LEARN THAT WE CANNOT HANDLE HOLY THINGS CARELESSLY WITHOUT SUFFERING SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES.”

Yes,…I have heard sound teaching from Mark Driscoll, but I have also heard teaching that undermines the honor, respect and integrity of the Word of God. In fact, I would say his new comedy material based on the Book of Genesis, which he claims sounds like it took place in a white trailer park, took my breath away. There is no excuse for this. Mark Driscoll needs to take a time out. Maybe put into practise the character of an elder?

When I co-authored Spiritual Junk Food:The Dumbing Down of Christian Youth, the handwriting was on the wall. I now ask, is not anything sacred to us anymore? If indeed all Scripture is inspired by God, what does it say about our spiritual condition if we do not even consider the reckless attitude that would turn Scripture into material for a stand-up comedian? Ask The Gospel Coalition why Mark Driscoll will be speaking at their 2009 conference on “Rightly dividing the Word of Truth – 2 Tim. 2:14-26.” Mark Driscoll lacks the maturity and wisdom to teach this to the Church. What is the matter with us? If some of our prominent leaders are knowingly of unknowingly supporting Mark Driscoll speaking on this subject, it speaks volumnes about where we are going.

When I expressed concern to a pastor friend about Driscoll now having a place at the evangelical table, he said, “Once the Bible is discarded or dumbed down, anyone can find a place a the table…..I predict the table will get bigger.”

Mike, you are sending a mixed message and I am so disappointed that you have chosen to lower the standard. You are wrong.

    Mike,

First I want to say thank you for your support of Mark Driscoll. I am a young man who has read several of his books and have been blessed to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Savior Jesus Christ through reading them.

I’m curious as to whether or not Cathy has experienced the grace of God. Cathy seems driven to purge the church, not of heritics, but of a man who stands for Jesus as seen in the gospels and fulfill his calling to reach a generation. Driscoll is neither “dumbing down the Bible” or “discarding” it in anyway, but rather seeks to bring the entirety of it to a generation that is tired of pretenses like religion and legalism and seeks to know the true and living God, who, by the way, is able to defend Himself and is in no need of our “help”. I have met many in the church who seem more interested in pointing out Levitical sins like tattoos and sideburn length than in proclaiming we have a new covenant in Jesus and have been saved by His blood.

Through out it’s history, Christianity has been stained by religious legalism which pushes away sinners (who Jesus reached out to), idolized the religious leaders (who Jesus condemned) and made Christians live in constant fear of having any failings or short comings found out. I believe this is absolutely devistating to our ability to share the gospel openly with a culture who is in desperate need to hear of God’s love for us as shown through Jesus.

Cathy, please read Romans 5, 6 and 7. Before you do, pray, “Open my eyes that I might see wonderful things in Your Word.” Prayerfully you will understand who you are apart from Christ and will be motivated to share of His grace to others. Paul says, “I am determined to preach Christ, and Him crucified.”

Let the cross be your battle cry and abandon your misguided crusade.

former sinner and dead in my sins,
Now an adopted son, righteous by the blood of Christ.
