Rainer Says LifeWay Focus Must be Ministry

Dr. Thom Rainer, President of LifeWay Christian Resources, said recently that LifeWay must make ministry that organization’s main focus. At a presentation at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and reported by Baptist Press, Dr. Rainer said,

“One of the dangers we have at LifeWay is that we are so focused on being a business that pays its own way, that we forget that our primary purpose is not revenue production, but it is to do ministry for the benefit of local churches, primarily in the Southern Baptist Convention,”.

I have great respect for Dr. Rainer. He has been a guest on our radio program, and I am encouraged by his comments. However many of you know that if you go to a LifeWay store today, you will find numerous works by authors such as Brian McLaren, Brennan Manning and Richard Foster, not to mention Erwin McManus, Donald Miller and of course Rick Warren.

I am very willing to give Dr. Rainer the benefit of the doubt. But if he feels that LifeWays focus should be ministry first, then he will prove it by removing materials from its shelves that are questionable to say the least, if some not downright herectical. Dr. Rainer can do it and I pray for him that he does.

It takes time. It’s like turning a battle ship around in a bath tub. Do pray as it’s a huge undertaking to right any wrong within the SBC.
