“SBC at the Crossroads: Returning to the Old Paths”
from The Reformed Reader
Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths,
where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls.”
~Jeremiah 6:16
This article by Dr. Thomas Ascol of Founders Ministries was published back in 1995, but it is even more timely and relevant now twelve years later. Whether you are a Southern Baptist or not, but especially if you are a member of the SBC, one must be concerned and be willing to take an honest look at what is going on in this denomination.
In the piece, Dr. Ascol writes, “Call it what you will―Calvinism, reformed theology, the doctrines of grace―these truths are nothing less than historic Southern Baptist orthodoxy. This is the theology which gave rise to the formation and early development of the great missionary and evangelistic enterprise which we know as the Southern Baptist Convention. This is what our forefathers believed to be the true teaching of Scripture. These are the doctrines on which they built their churches and which undergirded their ministries. And if these doctrines were true then, they are still true today, because the Bible has not changed, God has not changed, and truth does not change. “

Hello Mike,
I’m afraid that with the warm embrace of the Emergent Church by SBC leaders all the way up to our president, and with the active promotion of emerging closet open theists like “cultural architect” and “distinguished futurist” Erwin McManus, there has been a decided turn away from the Biblical doctrines of grace toward a semi-pelagian “missional” view of soteriology.
I for one don’t see a return to the “old paths” for the SBC, but rather a bold rejection of them. That’s why quite a while ago I was led to write the article, Is the Southern Baptist Convention Itself Filling Up with “Dead Churches”?:

As usual, because I’m not a “name,” it has been soundly ingnored…
Mike,
I applaud Dr. Ascol’s article and your conviction to post it. It seems the SBC is hiding behind the terms liberal and conservative, thus justifying the deafening silence on so many issues today.
The growing cloud of confusion within the SBC is creating a dangerous environment for me and my family.
Nashville can keep the publishers, the copyrights, and CD’s, but for me and my family we will serve the Lord.
